Oriental Antique Rugs and Carpets are our Speciality
Oriental Rugs
An Oriental Rug is a heavy textile made for a range of utility and symbolic purposes and produced in the Orient—anywhere east of Europe—the Near East, Middle East and Far East. Often called Islamic Carpets, the term “oriental rug” is used mainly for convenience.
Kilim Rugs
A Kilim is a flat tapestry-woven carpet or rug traditionally produced in countries of the former Persian Empire, including Iran, the Balkans and the Turkic countries. Kilims can be purely decorative or can function as prayer rugs. Modern kilims are popular floor coverings in Western households.
Iranian Rugs
Rugs woven by Iran’s tribal villages are known for their fine wool, bright colours, and traditional patterns. Nomadic village weavers often produce rugs with bolder designs, which are considered as the most authentic and traditional rugs of Persia. Gabbeh rugs are the best-known type of carpet from this line of tradition.
Persian Rugs
Persian Rugs, also known as Iranian Carpets, are produced in Iran (historically known as Persia). Carpet weaving is an essential part of Persian culture and Iranian art. Within the type of Oriental Rugs produced by the countries of the “Rug Belt”, the Persian carpet stands out by the variety and elaborateness of its myriad of designs.
Bokhara Rugs
Antique Bokhara Rugs from Kazakhstan are hand-woven Turkmen tribal rugs. The most typical design is derived from the Ersari main carpet, with the elephant’s foot design—often referred to as a Tekke design. Modern Bokhar rug copies come from India and Pakistan. They are woven exclusively for export in various patterns and colours.
Silk Rugs
Silk Rugs are costly due to the fineness of the silk and time it takes to make them. They come from China, Kashmir and Iran. Many silk rugs are made in Qum in Tehran. These densely-knotted rugs are very decorative, and often hung on walls. Designs feature traditional motifs or pictorial scenes—such as a tree of life design.
Caucasian Rugs
Caucasian Rugs of the Caucasus (including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and parts of southern Russia) often display bold geometric designs in primary colours. Typical regional styles are Daghestan, Shirvan, Gendje, Kazakh and Quba rugs, plus the Ardabil rug from northwestern Iran.
Turkish Rugs
A Turkish or Anatolian Rug is a term of convenience for any rug made in modern Turkey. Within the group of oriental carpets, the Turkish rug is distinguished by particular characteristics of its dyes and colours, motifs, textures and techniques. Examples range in size from small pillows to large, room-sized carpets.
Contemporary
Contemporary Rug design, like modern art, belongs to the late 20th & 21st century. Their colours, design motifs and method of production are as many and varied as the regions that make them. They can be hand-knotted, flat weave, tufted pile. They vary in size—from prayer mats to large carpets for modern homes.
